Reflections from a Diamond

This is the picture that appears at the end of Miss Isabel's blog Voyage A La Mer... A Diamond Shaped Journey. I was asked to simply read the blog and create a picture inspired by what I read. So, this is what came to mind.

The idea is based on light passing through a diamond and the light being broken into fragments and scattered around the room. The guys tell their story about their journey to Japan, their story a collage of experiences... Not yet edited into a perfect picture or movie... Not yet polished (like a diamond).

Super Chuck

Today was Chuck's birthday.
It was difficult drawing him this year... he use to have a big bushy beard and a slightly longer hair.
Chuck is the new recruit on the YFE MySpace UK & Ireland Street Team... He is not a new kid in the camp, he is just new on the community page itself.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Amy

"I said I want to be a ninja; they say I can't have a shell! I am born to be....lol. Seriously, I'm born for something greater than any imagination, greater than what's considered possible! We all are! The impossible is always possible!"
                                                                                                - Amy

My friend Amy (from the YFE* crew) made that post on her Facebook status... it inspired me to do the picture.

If you are ever stuck for inspiration or are experiencing an artist's block, check out your friends' status on Facebook. Who knows what might inspire you.

Kanu, the Ladies Man

Kanu was a ladies man... I guess he has to fill the hot tub somehow these days

This a picture for Kanu's birthday...the thing is this is very VERY later!! His birthday was 2 weeks ago.

The idea behind this was to play on the idea that Kanu was a ladies man. In the early episodes of YFE-TV, Kanu pretty much had a harem of attractive ladies waiting for him when he got home and as well as joining him in the hot tub... I wanted to revisit that idea but at the same time do something funny.

Sandra and Marjolene's Birthdays

Happy Birthday Sandra and Marjolene!!
This is a late birthday picture. For those who might not know who these two are: Sandra is involved with the YFE Merchandise Store and Marjolene is involved with promoting. Their birthdays were earlier in the week. My time management is all over the place since I came back from my summer in Canada and I didn't quite throw myself into this picture like I normally do.

Better out there than in here

This picture is far from finished. In fact, this is still in the beginning stages. I have posted it because I don't know when or if I will get around to finishing it.

The girl all the bad guys want

Just a Spider-Man picture that came into my mind.
There are a lot of inaccuracies in this picture... Such as why is Mary Jane so happy with Flash Thompson?
Spider Man is asking himself the same question.

A HeLa of a lot of Trouble (in the Lab)

This picture was inspired when I came across an article about Henrietta Lacks and her immortal cells - HeLa. These cells originated from the cervical cancer cells taken from Lacks. All this happened in 1951!! The cells are still in existence to this day, The article explained that there are now more of these HeLa cells than the body mass of Lacks. This got me thinking.
What if these cells were allowed to mutate and grow in one jar?
Could a human or a creature climb out of it?
The reality of course is NO, but that is what fiction is there for.

Christine's Birthday

A Belated Happy Birthday. Christine loves her vegetable garden.
Last week was Christine's birthday. I was working on this picture at the time, but I decided to not do anything with it in the end.

And now that I look at this again... it doesn't even look like her.

More Than Colouring Pencils... A Life In Technicolour

I did this picture as part of my interview with Miss Isabel. I think my answers were longer than she expected and the interview had to be divided into two parts. Both parts of my interview are available now on the Your Favorite Eneimes' Mypsace page.

Moose going too far with Twitter

A request from Miss Isabel. She had the idea for a picture of Charles going too far with his love for Twitter.

Vintage Big Bird

I was asked to do these nearly a year ago. I still don't know why! They were never used in the end.
Big Bird (Matt) has changed his look since then.

Space... The Final Frontier

I already posted pictures of the sketches and cleaned-up line work of these two weeks ago. I finally got a Intuos4 (and yes, I am worried about the corrosive work surface and fragile USB connection) which meant I could finally colour some things in

There is a bit of a story behind them. I was working in the studio with Sef quite a bit, so I was inspired (or ordered, I can't remember) to draw a Space Gorilla based on his tattoo. I went with a "dirty" look for it, a break away from my usual child-friendly work.

Sef:
'Do you know what would look good with a Space Gorilla?
A Space Moose!!'

Jeff has so many Followers

Miss Isabel came to be with an idea for a picture...

You too can Follow Jeff on Twitter. Are you "rock" enough to Follow Sef?
Or for more relevant info about whats going on, check out Your Favorite Enemies on Twitter too.

Juliette's Birthday - YFE France

Yesterday was Juliette's birthday. Naturally, like all things, I only discovered that morning. It took me most of the day to figure how I was going to draw her. I then procrastinated for awhile and then eventually thought about what I was going to do for the background.
She had recently returned from an adventure in Tennessee where she visited the Smokey Mountains... and saw a bear.

I added a bit of black and white colour to this image in Photoshop using the Magnetic Lasso tool.
The picture I gave Juliette only had the pencil.

Some Stuff

WOW! It has been a long time since I experimented with this blog. I am still testing other sites to see what would be the best way to get my art out there while at the same time try to show people the process that goes into it.
So far, I have had some luck with MySpace . I don't know what is the best option though... I can't imagine many people reading any of my blogs.

Some Stuff...
I don't have access to my Intous3 or any other Wacom at the moment, so I have been stuck with doing some pencil/ pen sketches. They are rough (in my opinion) and very unfinished. But I thought I might as well post them since I don't know when (or if) I will get to finish them.

It's tough work adding any form of atmosphere using just the touch pad on one's laptop!

This picture was inspired by this article I found about the cancer cells of a woman that have been in use for the past 50 years.

Sketchs from Sangion: Behind the scenes

Yellow Pad Sangion

Sketchs from Sangion: Behind the scenes

Around this time last year I did a picture for a musician from the Isle of Man - Clara Barker. Back in January 2009, Clara posted a bulletin and a blog asking for art inspired by her yet to be released song “Sangion.” I did not immediately reply to the blog. In fact if you do look at the blog you will see a good two months went by until I replied. My thinking was that out of the 10,000+ friends she had, hundreds had to be better and more specialised than me. The moral of the story, don’t hesitate!! Give it a go!! Who knows?! And that goes for anything.
After two months I was getting a little impatient. I thought she was waiting for artwork before posting the song in her player. I thought the picture would be just for that small image in the player. A year later and Clara still hasn’t posted that song on her page :D (although there are a few new ones from her album on there).

I wasn’t really sure what to do for the picture.
During the two months where I didn’t reply I did a few scribbles of clichéd scenes (the usually mushy lovers embrace or what ever), but because I never intended on being part of the project at the time, these scribbles look worse than my doodles.

Because I was so late to the party, Clara already had a few submissions which meant she wasn’t afraid to tell me what she actually expected from my picture. I would have made her tell me what she expected anyway. Basically she wanted the characters to be based on real people (which has in a way become my speciality these days).

Reading the lyrics is very different to actually hearing the song. For some strange reason I imagined it was about the characters battling either a war, the world, or each other’s emotions when they were apart. To give it a Japanese flavour (and because my style isn’t very manga to begin with) I set the image in feudal Japan. I based the samurai uniform on the one Tom Cruise wears in the movie "The Last Samurai." I did a second version of the image where they are wearing more modern clothes, just in case I was going in the wrong direction.
