Sketch Cards Copic

Ariel - Little Mermaid

Some copic sketches I was messing about with. Done on "Make it Color" blending card. I then cut them down to a trading card size 2.5 x 3.5.
I used a template from Comic Book Graphic Design.
Disclaimer: I'm new to copics and still in the early experimenting stages. I find that scanning the finished sketches doesn't do them justice.

Lili Bayliss - X Factor New Zealand.
Looks nothing like her but worth the practise.

More experimenting with Copic Markers.

I did this on a tiny piece of watercolour paper (6cm x 6cm). I messed up the shadowing on the neck.

Apparently it is not recommended to use watercolour paper because it soaks up too much ink making the markers run out quicker. The results are a lot nicer than the other card and paper I have been using.

I managed to find a website that sells card stock that seems to be a favourite among copic marker users (on this side of the Atlantic). I should have it late next week, so we might see some sort of improvement.

All the card or paper that is recommended on the internet seems to be only available in the US. And the stores that I can find online either don't ship outside the US or charge ridiculous money for postage. Even ordering from the UK, I have to debate with myself if it will be worth it.
If there are art shops in Ireland (or other shops in the UK) that do supply the paper recommended for copic markers, they need to sort themselves out and be more visible on the internet!

I'm missing days (again) due to working on props for a school play.

Daily Picture: 10

Part of the "30 day drawing challenge" I found on Deviant Art.

Today's theme was "Something from your childhood."

Bosco was a children's TV show that ran from 1978-1987. It continued to be shown until 1996.

Q: "Joe, what happened to Day 9?"
Ah, yes. I'm slipping a little with these daily pictures (as I expected, but it's still inexcusable as a personal challenge). Day 9's challenge was "Any form of Transport." Instead, I was out practising my driving. Close enough, right?

I still had time to draw, but didn't. I might still come back to it and upload a picture if I'm happy with it.

Daily Picture: 8

Part of the "30 day drawing challenge" I found on Deviant Art.

Today's theme was "Draw your star sign."

My star sign is Leo... so you might see where I was going with this.
I was having a difficult time trying to draw a lion. So I decided to draw a quick picture of Lion-O to experiment a bit more with the copic markers (I'm still bad and still using rubbish paper).

Daily Picture: 7 (coloured)

My new set of Copic Markers arrived this morning, so I decided to try them out on this picture (from earlier).

It was my first time using Copics and I used crap card paper, so needless to say the end result was always going to be far (very far!) from perfect.
I still have a lot of practice ahead of me.

Seeing this picture in colour, I am mortified by how bad the original drawing was. I was trying to be fancy with a cartoony style (big head on stylised bodies), but I can see this is a mess. Andy's left hand is drawn in such a way that his sleeve is telling me his arm is too short, but the hand itself is close enough.

I need a lot of pratice with traditional art. I have depended on Photoshop all these years for correcting mistakes.

Daily Picture: 7

Part of the "30 day drawing challenge" I found on Deviant Art.

Today's theme was "Favourite actor/ actress/ Movie Character."

I don't have a favourite actor (all though I am a fan of Tom Cruise). So I decided to draw an actor (or character) I was watching at the time of drawing this. I was watching "Uncle" on the BBC iplayer.
Okay, so that isn't anywhere near what the theme was, but I stayed with "actors."

The actors here are suppose to be Nick Helm (Andy/ Right) and Elliot Speller-Gillott (Errol/ Left).

I'm falling behind on uploading these pictures. I am actually doing them on the day... but then uploading them after midnight, or well into the next day.

Part of the "30 day drawing challenge" I found on Deviant Art.

Today's theme was "Redesign a book cover (that's not a movie)."

Daily Picture: 5 - Ninja Day (Japan).

Another picture that took longer than I liked for an unsatisfying result. I'm late posting this one too.

Today's theme was "Favourite TV cartoon character."

It was National Ninja Day in Japan (Feb 22) so I decided to draw my favourite ninja. I'm sure Japanese visitors will role their eyes and be quick to tell me that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aren't real ninjas.

I also realised while thinking of TV cartoon shows that I couldn't think of any from the last 10 years. I am getting too old!! lol.

From the "30 day drawing challenge" I found on DeviantArt, today's theme is "Star Wars."

This took a lot longer than expected and is still unfinished! I thought it would be a quick doodle, but it ended up taking a long time drawing it into Photoshop and then I got too obsessive about the line quality, so that ended up taking even more time.
I am a fan of the Pod Racing scene from Episode One. I loved it so much I have the old PC game and the PlayStation 2 sequel.

Daily Picture: Day 3

Staying with the "30 day drawing challenge" I found on DeviantArt, today's theme is "Favourite Pet or Animal."

I drew my dog, Molly. (Pom Terrier).

She is a bit of a nuisance when it comes to barking. I don't even think she knows why she is barking or what the expected outcome is. She barks at people that come to the house, barks at them when they stop rubbing her, and then barks at them when they are leaving. She even runs up barking to dogs (Boxers) that come into our garden from next door, much bigger than herself. Very gentle dogs actually, but their size can be intimidating.

It got me thinking what other creatures would she stupidly have a stand-off against.

Drawing animals or nature scenes (or any background scenes) is actually quite challenging for me and I tend to shy away from it, focusing on people instead. That might explain the stiffness of the scene above (very frozen and on display.
Rather than spend loads of time draw a dodgy sketch of just my dog, I went a little further (and maybe the easier route) and drew this scene. It was still tough and I'm not happy with the forest or the bear... or the dog.

I will need to start thinking about colouring some of these pictures.

Daily Picture: Day #2

I'm still struggling to come up with ideas for these daily drawing tasks, but I found a "30 day drawing challenge" over on DeviantArt that might help.

I was tempted to use some copic markers to add shades of gray and black, but I need more practise with them. I might come back to this picture in the future.

Daily Picture: Day #1

I haven't drawn anything in a long time. That's not completely true, but the things I have drawn or painted have been requests from the school (props, art project templates, etc). But I have been avoiding drawing or painting when there wasn't a demand.

It is that time of year we Irish Catholics call Lent. It use to be traditional to give up something during the 40 day event. Kids would give up sweets (except on St Patrick's day when they might get a temporary pass) or adults would try to give up smoking or drinking ("try" being the word). But it is also considered a time to take up a new habit, usually of the spiritual/ religious kind.

So, I have decided (among other things) to set myself the task of doing a picture a day during Lent...

I have been away from the action and convinced myself that maybe art isn't in my future after all (despite all the time and money gone into my Animation studies), and I'm finding it tough to get back into the swing of things.

This could be a rough 40 days. (or is it 46 days??)
