Inktober 2017: Day 22

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2zbq9G6

The commotion from the giant and the presence of the stranger's sword disturbed the Drinking Dragon from its slumber.  The hooded stranger landed on its back and grasped tightly to what he thought was grass, but it had a strong hold like hair.

The dragon soared up into the sky, encircling the giant. The hooded stranger preferred this way of getting to the giant's head.

Inktober 2017: day 21

[Flash back]
3 days earlier*.
The hooded stranger and the musician on top of Castle Rushen, Castletown:

M: "See that rock over there just near Calf of Man? That’s drinking rock."

HS: "Is that where people go to drink?"

M: "It looks like a dragon drinking from the sea."

HS: [straining to see] "ah! I see it now."

Inktober 2017: Day 19

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2z0QSoH

As the hooded stranger climbed higher and made his way up the giant’s shoulder, he paused and looked over the Manx landscape. He was both in awe and petrified. He could see all of the island and across.

Suddenly, the giant noticed the enchanted glow from the sword. It raised its hand and began to brush the hooded stranger off like a piece of dust…

Inktober 2017: Day 18

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2xXIGAy

The hooded stranger made some progress up the giant’s forearm before it stood up tall again. The climb was going to be harder now and progress was going to be slow. The sword could give him added ability to leap and climb, but the hooded stranger had never meet a kaiju this big before. Maybe this really was Manannán Mac Lir.

Inktober 2017: Day 17

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2yXS10e

Something was not quite right about the giant. The hooded stranger could sense an anger or annoyance from it. As he tried to reason with it and convince it to leave, the giant had enough. It slammed it's hand down on top of the hooded stranger. He managed to get enough distance, but it was extremely close. The force of the hand hitting the ground caused a mini earthquake, knocking the hooded stranger (and many of the crowd) to the ground.
The hooded stranger looked back at the hand. He quickly realised this may be the opportunity he needed to climb the giant.
The hooded stranger ran towards the hand...

Inktober 2017: Day 16

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2gUsdYt

The hooded man stood before the giant, his sword in the air and glowing. The giant bent down for a closer look at this strange spectacle.
The hooded stranger began to speak to the giant, or rather shouted at the giant over the roar of the sea and the struggle of his voice being lost to the wind. He spoke in a strange language that resembled Gaelic and Nordic.

The giant spoke back. It's voice was a sound the crowd watching had never experienced before. Rather than spoken with a voice, the words resonated in everyone's head. A low frequency rumble could be heard / felt, but the words themselves originated within their heads.

The hooded man's expression changed to disappointment. He looked back at the crowd, looking for the mayor. It would seem there was a major misunderstanding a few centuries ago and the mayor knew it...

Inktober 2017: Day 15 (late)

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2insu9S

The hooded stranger looked back at the crowd. The musician was walking towards him. In his hands was the hooded stranger's own sword which was taken from him back at the B&B. He suspected the musician wasn't too far away when he heard the choir.
Now with his sword back in his procession, the hooded stranger might be able to turn the tables...

Inktober 2017: Update

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2ym4VEN

Update: Day 15 / 16:

Some idea sketches and experimenting in a notebook.
You can see here why I'm regretting doing the giant so tall in day 14. I will continue with the extreme size since it might work with some other elements I intend to add.

Other things have come up, so I'm falling behind with the inktober sketches. I might be 2 or 3 days behind and might struggle to catch up. But I intend to have 31 sketches done regardless. (some people might remember last year I was two days late by the end of October).

Inktober 2017: Day 14

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2hI6ySP

The giant towered over them, standing there silently.  The hooded stranger was in awe. He then suddenly remembered his hands were still empty of a weapon. The swords the weapon dealer had haphazardly left behind were not suitable for anything, let alone taking down a mountain.

Friday 13 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 13

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2gExQcT

A loud bellow rumbles out of the fog. The weapon dealer hastily collected his swords and ran to join the onlookers. The hooded stranger could hear the sea swell and crash loudly against the cliff below. A storm was coming, but the wind did not increase.

Suddenly, a towering figure emerged through the fog. At first, the hooded stranger thought it was a large ship (before quickly remembering they were on top of a cliff). It resembled a moving mountain. The fog began to clear a little, and the hooded stranger got his first glimpse of Manannán mac Lir...

Inktober 2017: Day 12

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2xD8KG0

A mysterious figure unrolled a blanket and proceeded to lay out a selection of ancient weapons. The hooded stranger recognised them from the Manx museum. The collection consisted of old Viking weapons, corroded or damaged during burial ceremonies. The sword that wasn’t damaged looked to be an ornament, polished and never sharpened.
The hooded stranger's worry continued to grow. He couldn't use any of these.

The mayor announced to the crowd to step back and clear the area.

Wednesday 11 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 11

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2geDaGY

As the fog grew thicker, the hooded stranger looked at the mayor. For the first time that day, the look of glee and dramatics was drained from him, and now the hooded stranger saw… fear?

“What the hell…?”

A choir behind them began to sing...

Tuesday 10 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 10

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2yGlVWU

The hooded stranger rose to his feet. As the mayor continued addressing the crowd, a fog started to drift in from the sea.

"It is time! Manannán is coming!" roared the the mayor to gentle applause from the crowd.

Inktober 2017: Day 9

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2ydYZg5

The boat journey to the island wasn't long, but the walk was. After twenty minutes, they arrived at the lighthouses.
It was awkward walking with two men holding his arms. The hooded stranger tripped a number times along the way.
The mayor stood with delight, waving his arms and encouraging the crowd. Before them stood a huge wicker statue...

"What is that meant to be?" asked the hooded stranger, with a sense of panic as he started remembering the end scene from a movie.
"That is our Wallaby. They have flourished here on the island since the 70's. We thought it was an interesting representation of the uniqueness of our isle."
"...and the tourists love it," mumbled the hooded stranger, sarcastically.
"Actually, we don't know. This is our first year with Wally."

The hooded stranger started to struggle again.
"You can't do this! You can't put me in there!"
"In there?!" The mayor was startled. Then realised how this all looked.
"God no! that is just for spectacle. This isn't "The Wicker Man!"
Some people in the crowd laughed. One of the men holding the hooded stranger give a gentle chuckle.
"What the hell is going on?" thought the hooded stranger to himself.

Inktober 2017: Day 8

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2wIjA9c

When they got to Port Erin, everyone boarded buses going in the Cregneash direction. The hooded stranger was a little confused as they passed the living museum village. The only destination past the village was...
"... Isle of Calf?!" said the hooded stranger to himself.
"...ummm? Calf of Man, yes," said the mayor, as if remembering the hooded stranger had a voice. "We have boats waiting to take as many of the tourists over as we can."
"Why did we take that train? Wouldn't it have been quicker to take the bus the whole way from Douglas?"
"It's traditional!" Smiled the mayor. "...and the tourists love it."

Saturday 7 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 7

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2g1Xyej

The hooded stranger sat quietly as the train chugged along. He had taken this train journey earlier in the week, so he had a rough idea where he was going...

Friday 6 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 6

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2xoMkYP

The crowd paraded the hooded stranger through the market street. He saw tourists gleefully take part, buying masks or applauding as he walked past. The hooded stranger was now regretting not researching more about the island before arriving.
They eventually arrived at the train station. The hooded stranger was ushered onto a carriage.
"Finally, I can sit down again" mumbled the mayor to himself.

Thursday 5 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 5

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2xnlxfL

The hooded stranger had no sooner checked-out and exited the B&B when three masked locals grabbed him. One took his back packs while the other two held his arms.
He was about to put up a fight, but quickly realised they were far from alone. From what he could see, the whole town must have been there.
He didn't think his reputation had reached outside of his home village. He was about to discover that assumption was still correct.

Before him stood the mayor.
-"You have been chosen for the privilege of serving as our tribute to the Fomorians."
-"The what? Let go of me! What the hell is going on?!"
-"It was no coincidence that you came here when you did. Manannán mac Lir has sent many to protect us..."

Inktober 2017: Day 4

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2gejLme

The weather had cleared up by the next day. The hooded stranger made his way around the rest of the island, visiting Ramsey and finishing the day in Peel.
For such a beautiful ruins (near a long stretch of beach), he never visited a castle that was so difficult to find from the middle of town.
His only choice was to follow the slope of the land down through narrow winding streets in hopes of finding the beach. A number of times he was convinced he was going the wrong way.

Tuesday 3 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 3

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2fLUAHm

Visibility was poor due to wet weather, forcing the hooded stranger to abandon his plans for more exploring that day.
That evening, he sat quietly in an Italian restaurant, sketching in his little notebook while waiting for his pizza...

Monday 2 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 2

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2xVD6lx

The musician showed the hooded stranger around Castle Rushen. The hooded stranger had seen the castle when he took the "scenic route" the day before.

Sunday 1 October 2017

Inktober 2017: Day 1

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2xS9wgF

The hooded stranger had quite the trip to the Isle of Man. From getting on a bus that went in the wrong direction (and visiting half of the Island in the process) to crossing the Fairy bridge and defiantly not saying "hello fairies," the hooded stranger finally dropped his things at his B&B and went to meet with the musician at the sea terminal.

◀"Will I know it's a sea terminal when I see it?" Asked the hooded stranger.
▶"It's the building that looks like a giant lemon squeezer."

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark

I started this a few weeks ago, but only recently had the motivation to finish it. The image is inspired by her sing "2 big pumpkins." From the sounds of things, they are pretty impressive.

Doodles - May 23rd

Pamela Franklin - actress from the movie The Legend of Hell House

Bryce Dallas Howard (actress)

Ron Howard (from the TV show Happy Days

Instagram:
Practice images.
I wasn’t sure whether to post these as a group image or as separate images. I didn't think they were good enough for their own separate posts.
These are just some practice images. They are riddled with mistakes, but just like my other practice images I wanted to experiment rather than aim for a serious likeness (I probably didn't need to explain that)

1) actress Pamela Franklin as her character in the movie The Legend of Hell House.

2) actress Bryce Dallas Howard. I used an image from Google image search.

3) Ron Howard. Again I used an image from Google search. I used an old image from his days on the TV show Happy Days.

Doodles - Edmontosaurus #3

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2r8QDn7

More #edmontosaurus drawings. This time on recycled paper. The paper isn’t great, but it was cheaper than the toned paper sketchbooks that aren’t available in Ireland and end up being even more expensive with the cost of postage added on.

I’m experimenting with adding elements of red to the Edmontosaurus’ head. I saw clips from the Walking With Dinosaurs movie (apparently it’s a dreadful movie, but looks amazing) and liked the subtle suggestion of what their nasal openings may have been used for (possibly inflatable soft-tissue sacs).

Doodle - Edmontosaurus #2

I'm still practising drawing #edmontosaurus.

I experimented with adding textures from photos. I didn't put much time into adding the textures, the image was really just something I was playing around with.

The second image is a mix of doodles I did before hand. I tend to approach caricatures of people the same way. I do a lot of quick sketches and doodles to get an idea or feel for what characteristics make a person look the way they do.

Doodles - May 12

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2q8G3M6

I was just experimenting with a different approach and playing around with colours. I should have pushed the shadows a lot more and made them darker.

The hair was an afterthought. I was originally painting a generic bald head. I then added the hair style of Ariel (the little mermaid).

Anonymous gift [Core Membership]

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2piSJg9

Getting the anonymous gift was a bit like someone dropping a ticket or VIP pass into my hands. I didn't know where to begin to look to find the generous person. They had already disappeared back into the crowd of ideas and internet avatars.

My previous picture received quite a lot of attention (well, far more attention than I normally get).
Over on DeviantART, an anonymous user gifted me a 3 Month core membership during that time. It's really strange receiving anything for my work. I don't normally charge (or mention money) when it comes to my work. I'm always worried that my work isn't worth the money or that the person / client may become unhappy with the quality at a later date.

So, it was strange experience receiving the anonymous gift. It means someone appreciated my work / the image and felt it was worth sending me a donation (in the form of a 3 month subscription).

I don't know what to say to that, other than THANK YOU!

It's just a prank, Cody

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2p859u1

During the week, awareness was raised about a YouTuber by the name DaddyOfive (daddy ‘o five) and his large number of videos where he pranks his kids. However, the pranks are considered abuse as the dad (and his wife) verbally attack the kids to the point of tears. Physical assault by the kids on each other is encouraged and a vast majority of the pranks target one of the boys named Cody.

untitled - Vin Diesel / Iron Giant

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2phzALV

It's been well over a week since I posted any art. I have been spending a lot of time watching tutorials and work videos. But I have become more conscious that I'm consuming more than I'm creating.

This image is something I was messing about with. A very badly drawn Vin Diesel (looks nothing like him!) and the Iron Giant (he did the voice).

I feel I need to add a disclaimer about the giant. I'm still rubbish at drawing robots, so I went onto pinterest and used an awesome image by DKNG as reference.

Doodle - Edmontosaurus

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2nkn3Gc

Practice sketch of an Edmontosaurus Annectens.
Prehistoric Times posts requests for [free] artwork for their issues and the theme for July’s issue is Edmontosaurus and Kronosaurus.
I’m not use to drawing dinosaurs (I think I keep mentioning that) but I thought it would be fun to set myself a challenge to produce some art for it. They accept fan art from all ages, not just pro paleo-artists, so it’s not an impossible task.

I know Dino - Sabrina and Garret

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2o363Zb

I attempted to draw Garret and Sabrina from the palaeontology podcast I know Dino
I didn't put much importance on getting their likeness accurate, however I did find it very difficult to capture subtle details like their eyes and mouths.

A wet day for a Parade

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2ndu3ri

I only did this Friday night (St Patrick’s day) and tweaked it on Saturday. I was surprised how quick the day went! The parade was short but I still managed to lose moat of my day!

The close up crop, I was just messing about with some post-production stuff.

There are a number of mistakes, but like the artist Jake Parker says, “finished not perfect.”

We swim together: Parade float boards

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2mbuoeK

The two boards I did for the school's float in the St Patrick's day parade (2017). The school's theme was fish swimming together (I guess unity). All the kids were either dressed as fish or holding cardboard fish cutouts. The parents did a great job.

Too bad the weather was crap. It was lashing rain. The parade route was cut short and the whole thing lasted 30 minutes.

The woes of discovering a new follower

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2nEoXkI

I have seen an artist do a little comic story with this Instagram feature, so I thought I would give it a try. I'm clearly not very creative or funny when it comes to short comic strips. (when it comes to these things, I'm always worried about spelling mistakes. There is probably a few here).
*I added those little FB stickers which makes the strip a little funnier.

I have noticed more so over the past couple of months that I seem to get followers that are obviously fake accounts. Supposed beautiful women that have a link in their bio to chat with them (I don't click the link, so I can only assume it's a fake site too). I have experienced these kinds of profiles on Twitter and FB too (and as far back as MySpace).
They are clearly fake because the photos are of different random women. I even noticed that two accounts were high jacked. They still had photos of the original owners further down their time line.

Doodle - Mar 14

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2mnDeRR

WIP / doodle.
I say work in progress, but I probably won't go back to it.
I was trying to play around with a different painting process. I'm a huge fan of digital art that has a painted or traditional look. Way outside my comfort zone.

I didn't spend much time on it. It's more messing around than anything.

Get well card for Gabby

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2m9Nixy

A friend on twitter told me about a young girl in her small town in Iowa, who had just gotten out of hospital after having surgery for a brain tumour. She now faces a year of chemo too.😥
Thanks to the internet, little Gabby is receiving Get Well cards and postcards from all corners of America and UK. So now she is getting at least one card from Ireland too.
I saw updates on her progress on her mum's FB page. It's incredibly to see her smile after what she is going through.
I was originally going to make it a postcard (it's not very big), but I was worried it would get damaged. Also, the markers I used went straight through the card. So, I just mailed it in an envelope as normal.

Hopefully it will arrive safe and sound and in time for her birthday.

The female character is Viking shieldmaiden Lagertha. On her mum's FB page, someone made a reference to Gabby's hairstyle being similar to that of the Shieldmaidens in the TV show Vikings. Her mum continued to refer to her as a shieldmaiden. Appropriately, considering the bravery and strength needed to get through this.

A random leprechaun, because why not?
R2D2 and Bob the minion: I saw these a few times in photos and a video, so I'm assuming she really likes them (they were by her side in hospital).

Doodle - Mar 2

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2lHJyTW

I have been asked again to paint two boards for the local school's entry in the St Patrick's day parade.
We will see how that goes over the next week or so.

Wednesday 1 March 2017

Doodle - Mar 1

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2lHMZd9

It's March "of the Robots." I thought I would give it a shot to get me back into a routine. The problem is I don't tend to draw robots or any kind of machinery. So, this could be extremely challenging and I might give up...
I probably won't try to do one every day because it could take me 2 or so days to get them looking right.

This is a poor attempt for day 1.
I was kinda inspired by the robot that is gaining attention lately -the one that is able to balance itself on two wheeled legs and its "arms" (which look more like the legs of a chair) act as a kind of counter balance.

Hello Detective - Chapter 2 (requested illustration)

via Instagram http://ift.tt/2lVDw62

I got a request on Tumblr for an illustration based on their fan-fiction novel. I shouldn't really be doing free illustrations but I was looking for something to draw anyway, so I gave it a shot.
The story was based on the BBC TV show Sherlock ,starring Benedict Cumberbatch. I ended up binge watching four episodes while I did this.

The woman in the picture is a character written for the story. I was asked to design her like Leighton Meester (an actress in the TV show Gossip Girl). I didn't quite get her accurate though.
The story was strangely written in Second Person. I think it's some kind of genre designed to put the reader into the story

Story / tumblr: Hello Detective.
User: cutie1365
Chapter 2 (without the illustration):
